Dimitry Morozov’s book gives an inspiring and fascinating account of the birth and development of Kitezh, the unique therapeutic community he established in rural Russia. Morozov describes how a group of families living together devote themselves to the care and rehabilitation of orphaned children. The challenges and joys of this experiment in living are related in an informal style, and complex ideas are made accessible through anecdotes and reminiscences. Central to his philosophy is the concept of a child’s ‘image of the world’ as the lens through which all experience is filtered. A negative image of the world must be changed before the child can grow. At Kitezh this is done through love, education, support, discipline and honest feedback.
The combination of a loving family environment coupled with professional psychotherapeutic techniques, within beautiful natural surroundings is a potent mixture that provides hope for even the most damaged children.
Both parents and professionals working with children will find in this book a valuable tool and a fascinating read. It “is dedicated to those who consider raising children to be one of life’s highest callings …”
